Every workplace should know who will take charge if someone is injured or becomes unwell. A designated first aider gives employees a clear point of contact and helps an organisation respond calmly while professional medical help is arranged.

This does not mean one person carries responsibility for every emergency. It means the business has considered its risks, provided suitable first aid arrangements and trained enough people for the workplace, the work being carried out and the number of employees present.

What does a designated first aider do?

A designated first aider is trained to provide immediate assistance within the limits of their qualification. They may assess an incident, give first aid, support someone who is distressed, contact emergency services and record what happened.

  • Respond to workplace injuries and sudden illness promptly.
  • Use the first aid equipment and procedures provided.
  • Ask for emergency medical help when required.
  • Keep the responsible manager informed and report incidents appropriately.
  • Help identify gaps in equipment, training or arrangements.

How many first aiders does a workplace need?

There is no single number that is right for every business. Employers should assess the type of work, workplace hazards, workforce size, working patterns, lone workers, remote locations and how quickly emergency services can reach the site.

Plan for holidays, sickness, shift changes and employees working across different areas. A business may need more than one trained person so cover is available throughout the working day.

Which first aid course is suitable?
