Practical 1-day Level 3 Emergency Paediatric First Aid training for people who work with or care for babies and children.
This practical course develops the essential skills and confidence needed to respond to life-threatening paediatric emergencies, including CPR, choking, seizures, serious bleeding and an unresponsive baby or child.
The course is delivered entirely face-to-face over 1 day and provides a nationally recognised Level 3 Emergency Paediatric First Aid qualification.
Course Description
Emergency Paediatric First Aid is designed for people who need essential emergency first aid skills when caring for babies and children.
The course focuses on the immediate actions required during serious or life-threatening emergencies and gives learners plenty of opportunity to practise using infant and child CPR manikins and dedicated first aid training equipment.
It is particularly suitable for early years staff, nursery workers, school staff, childcare professionals and others who have responsibility for children.
Under the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), newly qualified Level 2 and Level 3 early years staff can hold either a full Paediatric First Aid or Emergency Paediatric First Aid certificate in order to meet the relevant staff ratio requirements.
However, Emergency Paediatric First Aid does not replace the requirement for a full Paediatric First Aid-qualified person to be available whenever children are present and to accompany children on outings.
If somebody will be relied upon as the setting’s full paediatric first aid provision, our 2-day Paediatric First Aid course is the appropriate option.
Candidates need a suitable level of English to understand the course content and complete the required assessments. Reasonable adjustments may be available where appropriate, so please contact us before the course if you would like to discuss individual learning requirements.

Face-to-face Learning — Our Fave!
Emergency Paediatric First Aid is delivered entirely face-to-face over 1 day, providing a minimum of 6 hours of training excluding breaks.
The course is deliberately practical.
Learners practise CPR on both infant and child manikins, use AED training devices, manage choking, control bleeding and work through realistic emergency scenarios.
The EYFS requires Emergency Paediatric First Aid training to be completed face-to-face, so this course is not offered through blended learning.
Emergency Paediatric First Aid or Full Paediatric First Aid?
Emergency Paediatric First Aid (1 Day)
Covers essential life-saving skills such as CPR, choking, seizures, serious bleeding and managing an unresponsive baby or child.
Full Paediatric First Aid (2 Days / Blended)
Covers the emergency content above, plus a much wider range of childhood illnesses, injuries and medical emergencies.

Emergency Paediatric First Aid can be appropriate for some early years staff, including eligible Level 2 and Level 3 practitioners.
However, your setting must still have at least one person with a current full Paediatric First Aid certificate available whenever children are present and accompanying children on outings.

Assessment and Certification

The objective is not simply to pass the qualification. We want learners to leave feeling confident enough to respond effectively if a baby or child in their care becomes seriously ill or injured.
Certification
Successful learners receive a nationally recognised, Ofqual-regulated Level 3 Award in Emergency Paediatric First Aid (RQF).
The qualification is valid for three years.
Learners who need to maintain their qualification must complete appropriate training again before their certificate expires.

What’s the difference between Emergency Paediatric First Aid and Full Paediatric First Aid?
Emergency Paediatric First Aid is a 1-day course concentrating on essential life-saving emergencies such as CPR, choking, seizures, serious bleeding and managing an unresponsive baby or child. The full Paediatric First Aid qualification requires at least 12 hours of training and covers a much wider range of childhood injuries, illnesses and medical emergencies. Full Paediatric First Aid is required for the person providing the setting’s full EYFS paediatric first aid cover.
Can Emergency Paediatric First Aid be completed online or through blended learning?
No. The EYFS requires Emergency Paediatric First Aid training to be undertaken face-to-face, so the course is delivered entirely in the classroom.
How long is an Emergency Paediatric First Aid certificate valid for?
The Level 3 Emergency Paediatric First Aid qualification is valid for three years. Learners who need to maintain the qualification must complete appropriate training again before their certificate expires.
