Basic First Aid Techniques Every Employee Should Know

Every employee does not need to be a qualified first aider, but everyone benefits from knowing what to do when an incident happens. A clear response can protect the injured person, reduce further harm and help emergency services when they arrive.

Useful first aid skills at work

  • Checking whether a scene is safe before approaching.
  • Calling 999 and giving clear information.
  • Recognising when someone is not breathing normally.
  • Managing severe bleeding, burns and minor injuries appropriately.
  • Knowing where first aid kits, AEDs and trained first aiders are located.

Know your limits

First aid is about giving appropriate help until professional care is available. Do not take unnecessary risks or attempt treatment beyond your training. Follow the emergency dispatcher’s instructions and keep monitoring the person.
