How to Stay Calm During a Workplace Emergency
Emergencies can make people rush, freeze or lose track of what to do next. Calm does not mean doing nothing; it means slowing the response down enough to follow the workplace procedure and protect people from further harm.
A calm emergency response
- Pause briefly and check whether the area is safe.
- Raise the alarm and call 999 when the situation is serious.
- Give clear, simple instructions to the people around you.
- Ask someone to bring first aid equipment or meet the emergency services.
- Follow your training and keep monitoring the situation.
Prepare people before pressure arrives
Clear roles, visible procedures and practical training make it easier for staff to act. Rehearse the basics, make sure new starters know how to raise an alarm and keep emergency access routes clear.
