How to Administer CPR: A Step-by-Step Guide
Knowing how to respond to a cardiac arrest can save valuable time while emergency services are on their way. This guide explains the basic response for a workplace emergency; practical training is the best way to build confidence.
Recognise a cardiac arrest
If someone is unresponsive and not breathing normally, treat it as a cardiac arrest. Shout for help, ask someone to call 999 and send someone for the nearest automated external defibrillator (AED).
The basic CPR response
- Make sure the area is safe to approach.
- Check responsiveness and normal breathing.
- Call 999, put the phone on speaker and follow the dispatcher’s instructions.
- Start chest compressions in the centre of the chest and keep going with minimal interruptions.
- Use an AED as soon as it arrives, following its spoken prompts.
Why an AED matters
